Our story

Coming from a family of leather manufacturers from father to son since 1800 in Cherbourg, Jean-Pierre Yvon created and registered the brand "Le Véritable Cherbourg" in 1986. Today, it is taken over by his son Charles and has become " Le Parapluie de Cherbourg " since March 2020.

Leather Manufactures

The Yvon Leather Factory established itself in Cherbourg. From father to son, the family tanneries collected national competition awards and medals and supplied the biggest brands.

1963

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Filming of Jacques Demy's film, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." It was the first film to be entirely sung and filmed in the streets of Cherbourg. This love story, starring Catherine Deneuve, received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. The people of Cherbourg, enthusiastic during the filming, became somewhat gloomy following the publicity the film gave their town. The town then became famous for its bad weather.

The Real Cherbourg

Twenty-three years after this work, Jean-Pierre Yvon, a photographer based in Paris and around the world, returned to his "land of secret gardens," the Cotentin, and restored his city's reputation. In 1986, he created and registered the "Le Véritable Cherbourg" brand. Handcrafted with French expertise, the Véritable Cherbourg was tested in a wind tunnel to validate its strength while preserving its beauty.

Japan

Le Véritable Cherbourg is exporting and meeting with Crown Prince Hiro Nomya Sama of Japan. He is honoring French fashion designers and manufacturers at the International Trade Fair (Art de vivre) in Tokyo. The brand is rolling out its designs internationally and attracting a wide audience thanks to the elegance of its products.

The ParaPactum

Creation of the ParaPactum brand. To ensure the protection of VIPs and personalities, the ParaPactum is without equal in the world. Patented, it is designed as a high-performance sailboat. While the materials it is made of and its architecture are foolproof, it hides its strength with finesse in the elegance of its lines. Indeed, extreme tests are carried out: in a wind tunnel by the Aerotechnical Institute of Saint-Cyr-L'Ecole of the CNAM, with dogs (25 kg launched at 35 km/h) and various blunt objects launched at full power...

Our trophies

Many trophies have been awarded to Véritable Cherbourg such as: INPI Trophy, Winner awarded to congratulate the skills, knowledge and universe of an innovation; Made in France, Prize awarded to reward a product made in France Stars et Métiers, Trophy which congratulates the excellence of a craft innovation. Véritable Cherbourg receives the Qualité Tourisme label. It is issued by the State to validate the quality of the services offered by a professional, in the tourism sector. These honorable awards prove the excellence of the brand as well as its unique know-how. In addition, customs validates its French manufacturing: it receives the approved exporter number.

Brand expansion

Charles Yvon, son of Jean-Pierre Yvon, has been immersed in the family business since his early days. He first became involved as an innovative developer before taking over as CEO in July 2018. With a scientific background, Charles Yvon then trained in Management at E2SE in Caen and then enrolled at the prestigious EM Grenoble business school. As soon as he took over the reins of Véritable Cherbourg, Charles Yvon began developing the brand in France and abroad. From 35 retailers, he aims to increase to 100 by the end of 2019. Always brimming with ideas, Charles continues to boost the brand's image through new collaborations with prestigious brands. For a Made in France label that makes sense but also to support the local economy, the young entrepreneur demonstrates his desire to work closer with his suppliers.
